Practically every single person over the age of puberty regularly shaves, has tried shaving, or at the very least, has heard of shaving. It’s no surprise that this is the case – after all shaving is one of the most common, if not THE most common hair removal method. And why wouldn’t it be – shaving is cheap, and best of all it’s convenient; convenient because there is no need to have any special equipment, there is no need to use any sort of wax or strips… all you need is a razor. And as things go, razors can be quite cheap.
But the question is – have you been shaving the right way? You see the fact is: many people shave, but not everybody is doing it the right way, leading to a few negative side effects and outcomes. If you’ve ever shaved and come away with things such as razor burn, nicks, skin irritation, and itching, you may have been shaving the wrong way.
Who knew there was more to shaving than just running a razor over your skin, right? But the truth is, there is a bit of an art to shaving so that you can come away with a close shave without irritating your skin or hurting it.
Shaving Tips for Females:
If you want to learn more about shaving the right way, simply read on to get more tips on how!
Get The Right Blades for Shaving
When it comes to getting the smoothest, closest shave without leaving yourself covered in micro cuts and razor burn, it may be a wise idea to invest in the right razor blade. In this case, the right razor would be a multi-bladed one. A sharp razor with multiple blades requires less passes over the skin to get rid of all the hair. This decreases the chances of you getting irritated skin because you are running the razor over your skin less.
To reduce nicks, find a razor with a pivoting head so that it follows the contours and curves of your body automatically, instead of you having to change the angle of your shaving yourself in order to get your results.
And of course…I remember to replace your blades (get a razor with refillable or replaceable blades) the moment they get dull so you do not end up with the nicks and cuts you were trying to avoid to begin with.
Gel it Up for Soften the Hairs
If there’s anything you learn when you shave, it’s that you shouldn’t shave dry – first of all it hurts, and second of all, chances are, you will either nick yourself or hurt your skin, leaving it irritated and itchy. The gel (or shaving cream) helps to soften the hair, and it also provides your skin with a protective barrier from your sharp blades.
In cases where you don’t want to use shaving gel or cream, you can use an oil such as coconut oil – or perhaps your hair conditioner as it works quite well in a pinch.
It’s All in the Timing
When it comes to shaving, timing can also be key – the right timing can help you avoid all the negative side effects that might come up from shaving. Experts advice that it is a good idea to wait until the end of your shower before you shave, because it is a time when your skin is quite hydrated, which lessens the chances of it getting hurt by the blades.
When You Run into Issues
Despite all of the care you take to avoid getting razor burns or nicks, sometimes it still may happen. You may even run into ingrown hairs (don’t worry – we have the most comprehensive guide to ingrown hairs online!). When this is the case you can solve your issues with products that contain salicylic acid and cortisone. To soothe skin, you can even use aloe vera gel, which truly helps to soothe irritated skin.
Don’t use tweezers to dig at you in grown hairs, either – doing this may just increase the chances of irritation, and may even cause infection. Instead use salicylic acid, just a dab, over the spot to help slough off the top layer of skin through exfoliation.
Hopefully these tips will help you correct your bad shaving habits, and form new habits that are, fortunately, the right ones. Doing so will make your life easier simply because it’ll make regular shaving less of a pain – and you’ll always be silky smooth and hair-free.
